I’m a big fan of Kevin Smith, in fact I was actually a fan of Kevin Smith films before I knew who Kevin Smith was. I’m to young to of got into Kevin Smith films when they were actually released but somehow I randomly stumbled across the first Clerks films and loved it. This obviously led me towards Mall Rats and Dogma. It wasn’t until listening to New York radio show Opie & Anthony before I became aware of Kevin Smiths full career and his then new-ish Pocast – Smodcast.
I’ve listened to 3 years-ish worth of Smodcasts over the last 18 months and loved every minute of it. It gives you a peep behind the curtain of Kevin’s creative process, and showed his journey from retired (sort of) director to the new born creative giant who created Tusk.
Randomly around this time I was shown the film Tusk under my Dads premesis of “you need to see this movie, it’s the most fucked up thing I’ve ever seen” and it was. I had no idea it was a Kevin Smith film, until I heard mummers of the film been born from this podcast in a more recent of the podcast. I then had to back and discover the whole story and watch the film again.
Tusk is a 2014 American horror comedy film written and directed by Kevin Smith, based on a story from his Smodcast podcast. The film stars Michael Parks, Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Génesis Rodríguez, and Johnny Depp. The film is intended to be the first in Smith’s True North trilogy. Kevin allowed the fans to decide wether he should make this film by asking the fans to use the hashtags #mooseyes or #mooseno.
Two years later two out of the trilogy have been released and we are highly anticipating the release of the third – Moose Jaws. The name says it all really. It’s Jaws, but with a moose. “In a post apocalyptic Canada, the jawbone of the majestic moose has become the most coveted form of barter due to it’s capabilities as a multi-purpose tool and weapon. One moose has had enough. The great white north is about to be reclaimed by nature.” – IMDB
Production on the film began July 2016 and details are starting to come out. In June 2015, Harley Morenstein of “Epic Meal Time” confirmed he will be the lead in the film. Also Smith revealed that Harley Quinn Smith and Lily-Rose Depp will reprise their roles from Yoga Hosers. Kevin Smith has also mentioned that his character Silent Bob will be eaten by the killer moose.
Kevin Smiths True North trilogy is a testament to his belief of do what you love and enjoy it. Although some critics have not always understood the direction of the films, they are big hits with his fans and offer fans a great insight into Kevin Smith’s whole creative process.
